I am totally like that. I am more interested in reading what any movie is ABOUT rather than actually having to submit to their timeline entertainment.

Reading and watching are both acts of submission to someone else's mission.

Thank you for taking the time to tell me about that! I am starting to feel less alone in my eccentricities now. You make a really interesting point about Umberto Eco: he seems like a really interesting guy, but his novels (for me) have never quite hit the mark. But it would be fascinating, I'm sure, to read what he thought about them himself. A colleague recently lent me his copy of David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest. I'm not quite sure it's my cup of tea. I found the Introduction (by Dave Eggers) to be the best bit. He tells you all kinds of interesting things about what's waiting for you - certainly more interesting than what is actually waiting for you, which seems to be mostly about tennis and pharmaceuticals...
